Atopic Dermatitis

Shubhi came to doctor and with an anxious look she started showing the redness and dry skin lesion over the face and other parts of her baby boy Rishu and asked with a concern Dr Manoj what happened top mya baby , is he suffering from any reaction ? what condition is this ? I examined the baby and requested her to clam down and let me explain her the things.

After asking her few question about her baby, the baby products she was using, how

long the baby was having this and about her family history whether someone was suffering from any allergic reaction , asthma etc to which she nodded in affirmation and told that she had asthma – I told her that your baby was suffering from atopic dermatitis . after a pause I told her that tis is an inflammatory condition and this will be coming off and on. We will best try to control it and make your baby as normal as possible.

Now lets learn what exactly atopic dermatitis is .

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition which starts as relapsing and inflammatory course which may present in infancy or from 3-10 years usually. babies may present as early as 3 months of age and males are usually more affected than females. Babies may present as redness intense itching over the body and face is commonly affected in early age. In infancy extensors are mainly involved.

Later on in toddlers and above the elbow, wrist, knee etc may be involved in addition to face. There may be history of asthma allergy atopic dermatitis in family members .

The most important part is to understand the disease and course with your doctor and your doctor will then prescribe medications according to the severity and few medications may be required for long. Sometimes baby may require oral medications also.

The most important part of treatment is intense moisturization which need to be followed specially during winters when dryness and xerosis is maximal
